Sony BMG

INFORMATION:

Has your computer been harmed by F4i XCP software when you playback a CD on your computer?

About 120,000 Canadians may have bought Sony BMG CDs that can damage computers.
F4i designed the Digital Rights Management application that was utilized in content protection by Sony BMG. The application implants hooks into the Windows kernel. The technology is cloaking, utilizing a rootkit, most often known in malicious software or malware.
Rootkits are cloaking technologies that hide files, Registry keys, and other system objects from diagnostic and security software, usually employed by malware attempting to keep the implementation hidden.
The software is written with the intent of concealing its presence and operation from the computer user, and once installed, degrades the performance of the computer, opens new security vulnerabilities, and has the capacity to install updates through an Internet connection to Sony BMG.
A list of the affected CDs is contained on the website http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/canada/titles.html. The item number and UPC may have been different in Canada.
It is also possible that the CDs were purchased via U.S. distributors and websites. In that case, you should check the link on the Sony BMG website for those titles and not just the link for the titles in Canada.
