Western Students Salmonella Outbreak
So far, it is estimated that there have been 100 cases of illness, as university officials struggled to contain an infection whose source they're not quite certain of at this time.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit received 7 laboratory reports of salmonella between Nov. 8 and 9. All cases involved students at Western.
At least 5 people reported having eaten at the Pita Pit stand on or around Nov. 1 or 2. Health unit staff inspected both the Pita Pit and the Centre Spot.
Some health officials believe the outbreak may have begun at the Pita Pit, but the health unit received confirmation of several more cases.
In many of the new cases, students had eaten food prepared at the university, but not at the Pita Pit.
In total, more than 50 confirmed salmonella cases have been reported, with another 44 showing symptoms consistent with the infection.
